Step Three

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.

Made a decision – The dictionary defines a decision as a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration.

Turn our will and lives over – We need to replace self-will with “God’s will.”

God as we understood GodIn the last post, we discussed Sex Addicts Anonymous definition of a Higher Power.  Some members may already have a God of their understanding.  Some may have a God that is a punishing God.  Some members may have a good understanding of spirituality or a forgiving God.   Some may think of GOD as being a Good, Orderly Direction.

Step Three’s main point is to make a decision.  As the definition states, it is about “after consideration.” There is an old parable about three frogs sitting on a log.  One decides to jump off.  How many are now sitting on the log?   Three, that frog only decided to jump but has not jumped yet.

In the same way, we consider turning over our will.  This may happen now or later when we reach Steps Six and Seven.  More about self-will vs. “God’s will” when we reach Step Six.

In Step Three, we make a conscious decision to relinquish control over our lives and place our trust in a power beyond ourselves. This step is seen as a crucial turning point, as it opens the door to acceptance, humility, and the possibility of transformation. By surrendering our will and seeking guidance, we can find strength, hope, and direction in our recovery journey.
