Step Six

Step Six: “We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.”

entirely ready – The dictionary states ready as: in a suitable state for an activity, action, or situation; fully prepared

God remove – This means in “God’s” (or Higher Power’s) time, not our time.

defects of character – As defined in Step Five.

In this step, we reflect on our character defects, flaws, and negative behaviors that have contributed to our addictive or problematic behaviors. It requires acknowledging and accepting these shortcomings without reservation. The reference to “God” can be interpreted broadly, depending on one’s personal beliefs or spiritual understanding. It can be a higher power, a spiritual concept, or simply a recognition of a force beyond ourselves.

The essence of Step Six is a willingness and readiness to let go of these defects of character and allow for personal growth and change. It involves humility, honesty, and openness to transformation. It doesn’t imply that these defects will be instantly removed, but rather it signifies an internal shift towards a sincere desire and commitment to work on ourselves.

Step Six serves as a bridge to Step Seven, where we request assistance removing these defects and seek a higher power’s guidance and support in our ongoing recovery journey. It is a vital step in developing self-awareness, taking responsibility, and making positive changes to lead a healthier and more fulfilling life.
